DIY your mystery party props & costumes
Murder mystery parties offer many opportunities for people to get dressed up and become someone else. Being in costume is a great way to get everyone talking and take some memorable photographs. It also helps encourage people to let go and have more fun with their character.
A themed party is always a fun excuse for your friends and family to cut loose.
Putting together a bespoke outfit for the murder mystery party is 30% of the fun you'll have with your character. We have hosted hundreds of murder mystery parties. Although we'll gladly take the credit for the fun experiences produced, the creative tips below are all thanks to our client's creative imaginations. We picked our favorites, added some sources, and Voliá - a handy guide for a mystery party costume to die for!
Business Cards
Whether your character has been assigned a profession or just a social opportunity, a business card is a great ice breaker to introduce your "character" to other guests at the party, stand out from the crowd, and get "professional" referrals. You don't have to order them professionally just for the murder mystery party. Any home or public printer will work. No access to a printer? Try lipstick or markers for an effective and creative approach.
From Your Closet
Sexy Panties
You heard us right. One of our guests had a slightly promiscuous role, so she brought sexy panties that she would be dropping around gentlemen, trying to get them in trouble. Everyone had a total blast with it.
SCARF OR PASHMINA
Whether you'd like to add a stylish, chic flair to your character or have been assigned a spiritual role, scar or pashmina would work great to serve on both missions.
Hats
A hat is a great accessory to complete your outfit, whether your murder mystery character is posh, casual, or professional. You can buy a hat in our prop store or pull an old one out of your closet and add some DIY details like the photos.
FUR & LEATHER
Speaking of chic, fur (both faux or real ) will make you feel fabulous. Leather will give you a more rough or scruffy feeling, but certainly just as sure to make your outfit stand out.
RAID YOUR KITCHEN PANTRY
Often you'll find very realistic party essentials in your kitchen. Some of our guests have used ketchup for fake blood and gummy bears as edibles, etc. Once, a guest was walking around with white powder in his mustache. We discovered halfway through the night it was an Equal sugar packet used to mimic the look of drugs. Food dye can be a great assistant! One creative guest was assigned the role of a Chemist, and she brought all kinds of "chemicals" to play with.
EMPTY BOTTLE
If your assigned character is supposed to be "tipsy" throughout the night, carry a wine bottle. 19 Crimes wine offers the perfect design for a murder mystery party.
HIT YOUR LOCAL THRIFT STORE
Many of our clients and Dil Pickle Club popup event guests have shared that they have visited thrift stores to put together their bespoke outfits, found exceptional deals on props, and created jaw-dropping looks.

Amazon is perfect for last-minute costumes. Next day delivery, gorgeous (and affordable) bespoke dresses, and mystery party props such as cigars, pipes, gloves, jewelry make Amazon a win for completing your look.
